Overview

Investigations & Cases
Detectives are specialized officers trained to take the information provided by the Patrol Officers, apply specialized resources and expertise to reach favorable disposition of each case. These cases, by their serious nature, require efforts in following up time-consuming leads that may take them into other law enforcement jurisdictions.
In capital felony cases, the Detective occasionally must travel to areas outside the City, Broward County, and the State of Florida. There are specialized units as follows:
Crimes Against Property
These Detectives are assigned investigations of crimes against real personal property such as, Grand Theft, Burglary, and Auto Theft. These crimes are rarely witnessed or have physical evidence available. Often Detectives are left with numerous cases having few solvability factors and much of their time is spent recovering property and seeking charges for possessing and/or dealing with stolen property.
Crimes Against Persons
Detectives in this unit conduct investigations involving physical crimes against people such as Homicide, Sexual Battery, Robbery, Kidnapping, and Assault. Detectives also follow-up on Domestic Violence arrests and investigations of computer crimes (such as internet use by pedophiles).
Crimes General
This is the investigation of white collar/economic crimes such as Fraud, Forgery, Embezzlement, Exploitation of the Elderly, and other financially motivated crimes.
Juvenile Crimes
Detectives in this unit investigate crimes involving juvenile suspects and victims. They investigate allegations of abuse and neglect related to juveniles and the elderly, and are responsible for investigating missing person cases. They coordinate efforts with the Department of Children and Families to provide counseling and/or assistance to families in need.
Crime Analysis
The Crime Analyst is responsible for collecting, analyzing, and distributing crime information to Department Detectives, Patrol Officers and the Chief’s Office. The analyst must analyze and detect patterns of activity, trends and movement of crime and refer this information to Detectives and supervisors for tactical and strategic planning.
Criminalistics
The Crime Technicians are responsible for processing evidence, classifying and comparing latent fingerprints, and processing crime scene photographs. The work of this unit is paramount to the successful prosecution of offenders.
Victim Advocate
A Victim Advocate is also assigned to this division in order to assist crime victims with the emotional, physical and financial aftermath of a crime. Crime victims also have certain rights within the court system. There is a support group for victims of crime that meets at Hallandale Beach Police Department the 4th Tuesday of the month. For further information or assistance, Jill Fogel, Victim Advocate, can be reached at (954) 457-1431.
Vice, Intelligence & Narcotics Unit (VIN Unit)
The VIN unit gathers criminal intelligence information and disperses it to other appropriate law enforcement agencies and divisions within our own department.
VIN Detectives are also assigned to work with Federal and State Law Enforcement Agencies in regional task force operations. These Task Forces investigate high level and international narcotics violations and criminal money laundering operations.
When illegal funds are seized from narcotics criminals, the division oversees the process by which the courts award the funds to law enforcement. The former drug money is then used by law enforcement to enhance police operations and lesson the tax burden for our citizens.
