Sargassum Seaweed Webinar

August 12, 2020, from 1 PM to 2PM

Sargassum seaweed is an important part of the marine ecosystem, but in recent years the amount of sargassum washing up on beaches in Hallandale Beach and throughout the Caribbean has been extraordinary. Join us for a webinar all about sargassum and how humans can help. We're joined by experts in the field to give us the facts. Dr. Brian LaPointe is world-renowned as a sargassum and algal bloom expert and Afeefa Abdool-Ghany is a PhD student at the University of Miami focusing on the relationships between sargassum and bacteria. Learn more and get the virtual meeting information to join here.

Climate Action Plan Survey

This summer the City completed its first Greenhouse Gas Emission Inventory and established the baseline emissions. In order to reduce our emissions to meet our goals (45% reduction by 2030 and 100% reduction by 2055), we need a plan of action. Help us put that plan together by participating in our Climate Action Plan Survey before the end of August. Take the survey here.

Hallandale Beach awarded three Dune Restoration Grants from Broward County

We're happy to announce that the City of Hallandale Beach received three Dune Restoration grants from Broward County. These grants will allow us to continue removing invasive plants in our beach dune system and replant the dunes with native plants like sea oats. Sea oats and other native beach dune plant species will help stabilize our shoreline, protect against erosion, and create habitat for native animals like birds and butterflies. After Sea Turtle season is over, you may see machinery on the beach removing those invasive plants. If you'd like to be involved in the re-planting of the dunes, please let us know! We will be holding a few volunteer planting days in February 2021 (dates to be determined).
