Two Seats Available for Youths on the Sustainability & Flood Mitigation Advisory Board

The Sustainability & Flood Mitigation Advisory Board assists the City Commission to identify and recommend affordable strategies associated with sustainability, climate change, and flood mitigation. This Board works directly with the City's Green Initiatives Coordinator.

Because what we do now impacts future generations, we have designed this Advisory Board to include participation from youths who either live in Hallandale Beach or go to school in Hallandale Beach. There are currently 2 open positions on this Board which are held for individuals who are under the age of 18.

If you know a young person who has a high level of interest in helping move the City in a more sustainable direction, please have them submit an application to join this Board.

The application is available here.

Climate Action Plan Survey

This summer the City completed its first Greenhouse Gas Emission Inventory and established the baseline emissions. In order to reduce our emissions to meet our goals (45% reduction by 2030 and 100% reduction by 2055), we need a plan of action. Help us put that plan together by participating in our Climate Action Plan Survey before the end of August. Take the survey here.

so far in 2020 there have been 28 leatherback nests, 2548 loggerhead nests, and 200 green sea turtle nests
If you ever find a dead, sick, or injured sea turtle please call the Broward Sea Turtle Conservation Program immediately at (954) 262-3672.
Learn more about what you can do to protect sea turtles here.

Vulnerability Assessment and Adaptation Plan Adopted!

On August 5th the City Commission adopted the Vulnerability Assessment and Adaptation Plan (VAAP). The VAAP examines what areas of the City will be inundated in 20 and 50 years with sea-level rise and how our shoreline, groundwater, and rates of precipitation are likely to change with climate change. The VAAP also includes some short- and long-term adaptation actions the City has scoped like improving sewer lift station resilience to saltwater exposure, utilizing green infrastructure to reduce flooding in low lying parts of the City, and even raising bridges in the City to maintain vehicle access. City staff is working hard to secure grant funding to get these adaptation actions started. The full VAAP is available here for your reading pleasure.

Blink EV Charging Stations

Electric Vehicle Charging Stations Coming Soon to City Hall

New unified sea level rise projections up to 136 inches by 2120

Unified Sea-Level Rise Projections Adopted!

Also on August 5th, the City Commission adopted the new Unified Sea Level Rise Projections from the Southeast Florida Climate Change Compact. The City will now use these projections for planning purposes and we will also build our infrastructure to withstand the projected sea-level rise for the lifespan of each project or piece of infrastructure. For more information about this item, click here.

Post-Disaster Redevelopment Plan Adopted!

On August 5th the City Commission also adopted the Post-Disaster Redevelopment Plan (PDRP). This plan is a framework for the long-term recovery of any disaster - most notably hurricanes, flood events, and even COVID-19. Developed by consultants, city staff, and more than 30 community stakeholders, the PDRP focuses on building long-term resilience in the wake of a disaster. While disasters are by their very nature disastrous, they can provide an opportunity to achieve unfunded goals and projects given the funding opportunities that often follow a disaster. For instance, if storm surge from a hurricane destroys a road, we plan to utilize disaster-related funding opportunities to not only rebuild/repair the road but to build that road back to new sea-level rise infrastructure standards. The full PDRP is available for your reading pleasure here.
