We're expecting heavy sargassum strandings over the next few months. We continue to manage the sargassum each morning with our beach tractor. Floating sargassum seaweed is home, hunting ground, camouflage, and breeding ground for many marine animals. Baby sea turtles depend on sargassum for camoflage against predators as they grow up. Certain animals, like the sargassum fish, only live in sargassum. We continue to manage the sargassum that washes up on the beach each morning after the sea turtle survey has been completed.
Next time you are at the beach, learn more about sargassum by reading this sign we have at some of our lifeguard stands.
