The City of Hallandale Beach continues to be in the Hurricane Irma recovery phase. Below is a bulletin update of our efforts:
Power Status
FPL is working to restore power issues in the City. FPL has been actively replacing transformers and light poles across the City. Residents are reminded to call FPL directly at 1-800-4OUTAGE (1-800-468-8243), not the City, to check on the status of power outages. Residents may also register to be emailed for status updates by visiting: https://www.fplmaps.com.
FPL has committed that they should have the majority of South Florida back online by the weekend. Right now, the following municipal sites have electricity:
- Department of Public Works
- City Hall
- OB Johnson Park
- Fire Stations Main, Fire Station Beach, Fire Station 3 Isles
The Police Lobby and City Hall Lobby are open and additional power extensions have been added for the public to power and recharge their electronics.
Public Safety
A total of 46 sworn Police personnel are actively deployed throughout the City and performing patrol, business security detail and intersection management functions.
Fire and Rescue service remains at full capacity to meet the needs of our residents. Fire Chief Ellis has been requested to send a support rescue unit to the Keys to assist in their rescue efforts. While we are recovering, our neighbors suffering is extensive and we need to help. Further updates will be provided at next bulletin.
It is essential to point out that all five Adult Living Facilities (ALF) for the elderly were checked on immediately after the storm and reevaluations were performed to confirm their safety and well being. All residents are safe.
As traffic has increased, several intersections on Hallandale Beach Boulevard, that do not have traffic signal, have been configured to limit left turns. It is far safer for motorists to make a right turn and then go around the block or make a u-turn where designated, than to make direct left turn at these intersections. Please be extra cautious.
We are working with Broward County to have all traffic signals and stop signs available. We ask all to treat non-working traffic signals as a four-way stop. Traffic signals flashing red are to be treated as a stop sign. Flashing yellow traffic signals mean you may proceed slowly with caution. Again, please be courteous and cautious.
Parks and Recreation
Please take a moment to view the status of the following Park & Recreation Facilities:
North City Beach Park and South City Beach Park – Beaches are open. Ocean Rescue Lifeguards are operating on regular duty schedule. Parking meter fees at our two beach parking lots have been waived until further notice.
Joseph Scavo Park – staff has cleared the park and it is open as of today.
Marina –Marina fully operational
Sunrise Park - staff has cleared the park and it is open as of today.
Sunset Park – staff has cleared the park and it is open.
Golden Isles Park/Tennis – park/fence is still secured, the park is being trimmed and cleared and will be open as soon as possible.
Cultural Community Center –normal activities anticipated for Monday
Ingalls Park – park/fence is still secured, park will be evaluated as soon as possible
Foster Park – staff is onsite and have the park cleared and ready to open today. However, there are two very large trees uprooted with possible power lines entangled that will need additional assistance to remove. Roof leak evaluated and repairs in process. Normal activities anticipated for Monday.
OB Johnson Park – Will be opening tomorrow after 9:00 AM. Park fees will be waived and residents are welcome to visit for air conditioning, phone charging and other recreational activities. Normal activities anticipated for Monday.
BF James Park – Anticipated to open tomorrow after 9:00 AM. Normal activities anticipated for Monday.
EOC
The Emergency Operations Center (EOC) continues to run from 8AM to 8PM. We expect to be open until Friday. Residents are able to contact the EOC hotline (954-457-1319) during operational hours for information related to the recovery phase of the storm. We have experienced that the most resilient form of communication with the public to be email and social media.
We greatly value and are thankful to the support received from all, specially the volunteers from Community Emergency Response Team (C.E.R.T.), who helped us coordinate emergency efforts through the storm.
Utilities
The Finance Department waived late fees and shutoffs for the water bills until the end of September. The two boil water notices for (DeSoto Park South Condominium community and the homes on SW 8 AVE between SW 7 ST and 11 ST) are anticipated to be lifted tomorrow. Water samples tested did not return bacteria results.
All sanitary sewer lift stations are back online.
Garbage Pickup
Garbage collection for multi-family and residential units is being performed and should be back to normal schedule by this weekend.
Vegetative storm debris can be placed in the right-of way in front of your property, not on the pavement as that will impede ongoing restoration activities. Please keep the vegetative debris (tree limbs, leaves, branches) in a separate pile from all other wastes. Also, please keep the storm drains clear of storm debris. Non-vegetative storm debris (roofing materials, boards and construction material) must be kept in your yard and will be picked up later. A new post will be made as soon as we learn the exact dates and schedule for picking up non vegetative hurricane debris. When we begin picking up the non-vegetative debris, customers will need to move it to the swale.
Development Services
Fees have been waived for Emergency small repairs related to storm damage. For more information, visit www.cohb.org/emergencyrepair. The Building Division is available to assist residents and businesses with damage related questions.
Other updates
The Minibus service has resumed normal service. Residents are encouraged to use this and other means of transportation such as Uber and Lyft to get to their desired destinations.
Street sweeping crews are working in full force.
Restaurants and food stores are starting to open as power is turned on. For a list of businesses, see attached. Although certain businesses are listed as open, they may not be operating under normal schedule. Residents are encouraged to check with businesses directly for operating hours.
Schools are closed for the rest of the week.
Public Meetings have been rescheduled to the following dates:
• September 18, 2017 at 5:05 PM – First Budget Hearing – Special Meeting
• September 25, 2017 at 5:05 PM – Final Budget Hearing – Special Meeting
• September 27, 2017 at 5:00 PM – Special City Commission Meeting followed by a
Special Meeting of the HBCRA Board of Directors.
